The Escape

Juno leans against the clinic wall, waiting for Sparrow to arrive. The new moon and cloudy sky cast little light onto the ground. Perfect. No one will see us. She hears foot steps and shrinks into the shadows. The tall figure of Sparrow emerges, with nearly ten boys behind him. "Juno?" he calls into the darkness.
"I'm here, Sparrow." she whispers. He spots her as she moves out of the shadows. Her black dress raggedly cut up to her knees, with solid black leggings and black boots completely disguising her in the night. It takes Sparrow a moment to recognize her. Once he does, he leads the boys to her. She sizes them up. "Good." she breathes. "Boys 310 through 325, right?" Sparrow nods.
"The ones that weren't lost to the Forest or Moat, anyway." Juno flinches at his words.
"Well, not yet. Because, according to the Young Army records, the boys have all died on a highly unsuccessful Night Forest Training Mission tonight." Sparrow looks at her blankly. "My aunt was also in on this plan. She got Catchpole drunk enough to let her into the official records. She's good at what she does." Juno leads them all a little ways into the woods, toward the edge of the camp, well out of everyone's sight. Halfway through the trail, one little boy speak up.
"Aren't we past the boundaries? The Forest Witch Coven will surely eat us now." Juno looks at him.
"That's what they tell you will happen?" Juno whispers.
"Yes. We were told that the Coven put a Spell on this ground." Sparrow explains. Juno shakes her head.
"But the Coven's territory isn't anywhere near here. They're on the west side of the Castle. We're on the east." Sparrow and the boys stare at her blankly. "They've been lying to you, blatantly." Suddenly, a voice shouts in the distance. Juno curses under her breath. "We've been spotted. Battle silence!" she whispers. The boys close their mouths tightly and run after Juno. She leads them to the Moat, where one of the Sister's Resistance stands waiting on a boat. More women pour out from the vessel and help the boys onboard. When the last one has boarded, Juno turns to Sparrow. "Get on. Now." she orders. Sparrow nods and jumps onto the boat. Dozens of men carrying torches burst out of the woods, eyes blazing in fury.
"You!" one man yells. Another man dashes toward her, dagger in his hand.
"Juno!" Sparrow cries from the boat. Juno blocks out his voice. She mutters a Spell. An eruption of smoke blocks her from the mens' vision, and she leaps onto the boat. The Sisters look at her other nervously. Sparrow stares at her, uncomprehnding.
"You- you're a- Wizard?" he breathes. Juno reaches for him, but her backs away. "Wizard filth!" he cries. Juno's grows pale. "You tricked me into falling for you, didn't you?!"
"No! Well, at first, but, then I found out I actually was in love with you. That I am in love with you." Sparrow shakes his head.
"Your words mean nothing. What, you only helped them escape to you could, use Spells on them?!" Juno shakes her head.
"No, I wouldn't! And if you don't believe my words, what about yours? 'What if they were our sons?'" Sparrows looks away.
"Any son of mine deserves better than a mother like you." Sparrow walks to the other side of the ship and faces away from her. One of the sisters come up and puts her hand on Juno's shoulder.
"He'll calm down." she reassures Juno.
"If you just heard a loud crack, that was my heart... breaking."

  1. *sniffles* That's so sad! Don't you hate how people discriminate like that? Although his reasons make sense...

  2. I know. I really wanted to end it with hugz and happy endingz, but the characters made me write it, you know? Plus, you know what they say, when in doubt, add more confilct. But don't worry, happily ever afters will occur! I hope... that, or they die a tragic death holding hands. Which is better?

  3. I dunno... I think the tragic one makes more sense... But I really really hate depressing endings...
